Teaching Philosophy
As a graphic design educator, my goal is to help students build a strong visual literacy foundation while developing confidence in their ability to communicate through design. In an introductory course, I emphasize core principles—typography, layout, hierarchy, color, and composition—so students understand not only how to make something visually appealing, but also why design decisions matter. My classroom prioritizes process, experimentation, and reflection so students learn to approach problems creatively and think critically about their work. I believe students learn best through hands-on, project-based work paired with structured feedback. Critique is a central part of my teaching practice, and I work to cultivate a collaborative and supportive studio culture where students feel comfortable sharing ideas and responding constructively to peers. Assignments are designed to connect design theory with practical, real‑world applications so students see the professional relevance of what they are creating. Equity and inclusion are essential to my classroom. I intentionally integrate diverse voices, examples, and design approaches so students see the breadth of the field and recognize how design impacts people and communities. My role as an instructor is both facilitator and mentor—guiding students to become thoughtful, ethical, and responsible designers who understand that design has power and purpose.
