Ruthie Shigon

Blue Bell

Summary

As a freshman at the University of Delaware, I am excited to begin pursuing a Communication degree with an intended minor in Journalism. I have always been infatuated with political science and news, along with a deep passion for writing. I am particularly interested in the role the media plays in shaping public opinion, and the ways journalism can inform, challenge, and engage our society. I am eager to continue my academic journey and explore how these two passions of mine intersect and impact the world around us.

  • I am a staff reporter for my university's student-run newspaper, The Review. I have gained hands-on experience in journalism and news, which is my intended field to work in in the future. I have enjoyed learning how to write to inform and engage our community through honest, trustworthy journalism.

  • I worked in the district office of State Representative Liz Hanbidge as an intern. I did all her outreach, including letters to constituents, running the social media pages, and editing her weekly newsletter. I also engaged in research and legislation. This amazing opportunity gave me experience in political communication and state laws.

  • I have worked at Sunday School and the daycare at my Synagogue for all of high school. I led children in participating in activities that fostered their Jewish identities and learned leadership skills. I enjoyed watching the children grow and have new experiences.

Community Service

CHOP

Fundraising

2019-2024

I have raised money and hosted multiple fundraisers for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia over the span of five years. My fundraisers have had a specific focus on the Neurological department. I have raised and collected money to donate many times and even held a running event to fundraise and spread awareness. I have learned the importance of helping out my community through this and I enjoyed seeing the positive impact I have made.

L'Taken, Religious Action Center

Lobbyist

Washington DC, 2023

I did a program in February 2023, through the Religious Action Center organization, where I traveled to Washington DC for four days and lobbied in the Capitol Building. We spent the weekend learning about how to have our voice heard and how to make a difference in our government. We then spent a day in the Capitol Building speaking with Senators’ teams and presenting an essay we wrote about a topic that was important to us. I have learned how crucial it is to speak out about things that need to change in our world and how my voice has an impact. I enjoyed learning about how our government works also.
