Park Ranger (Interpretation)

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37 mile long barrier island off of the coast of Maryland and Virginia. There are six distinct habitats on the island and transitional zones between those habitats, all of which were all included in programs. The beginning of the season was mainly filled with environmental education programs for students in kindergarten through 5th grade. Our environmental education coordinator praised my student and class management and awarded me a staff award for my effectiveness and skills in education programs. Interpretation at this park also involves wildlife safety instruction and enforcement, mainly centered around the wild horses.
-Developed and presented a variety of programs including guided walks, illustrated talks (PowerPoint amphitheater and campfire programs) and demonstrations.
-Developed programs using principles of the NPS thematic interpretation model through topic research, familiarity with and creative use of delivery techniques.
-Provided informal interpretation and orientation for park guests in visitor centers, ranger stations and while roving in the field.
-Actively promoted the safety of park visitors and stewardship of park resources in all interactions, and potentially serve as the initial contact for accident reporting and emergency assistance.
-Assisted Resource Management with various tasks related to surveying the plant and animal life of the island.
-Planned, developed, and ran a special one-day program 2024 Assateague Adaptation Summer Games that had almost ninety participants.
Developed and wrote two interpretive programs (Beach Combers and Creature Feature: Great Egret)
-Worked with local businesses to secure product donations for our partner nonprofit to give out as gifts for participation in our annual Coastal Cleanup Event totaling in over $2,000 worth of product donations.
-Researched and found potential grant funding sources.
-Wrote a variety of social media posts covering different topics related to the plant and animal life of the island.
-Presented informal and formal talks, as well as many types of different interpretive programs like -Clamming, Crabbing, Bay Discovery, Touch Tank Talk, and Wild Horse Talk.
-Led guided tours, and respond to visitor inquiries for information, direction and guidance.
-Led activities and presentations for Environmental -Education for students in grade K-5.

-Educated visitors on area wildlife and regional history during tours and presentations.

Wildlife Management and Education Intern

As a Wildlife Management and Education Intern and member of the Wild Horse Management Team at Assateague Island National Seashore:
-Work was equivalent to the GS-5 Park Rangers I worked in conjunction with.
-Educated visitors on maintaining a safe distance from park wildlife, with an emphasis on the famous Assateague wild horses.
- Was responsible for moving horses from "Red Zones" (areas of the island that were problematic to have both humans and horses ex: middle of the road, campgrounds, crowded beaches, etc.)
-Limited negative human/horse interactions.
-Assisted with resource-based interpretive and educational programs, conducting informal interpretation through roving.
-Facilitated environmental education programs to a wide variety of K-12 school-age students in an
outdoor setting whether through roving, informal roving, assisting with kayak tours, assisting with ranger talks,
or other programs.
-Assisting with other natural resource management and monitoring programs.
-Enforced rules that ensured the public viewed wildlife from the proper safe and legal distances.
-Worked to ensure the protection of horses by recording horse movements and home ranges and by sharing these observations through public education.
